Jimmy Nieto

Teacher of the Year

Interviewed by 5th grade students: Manny Crispin and Jacob Morales

Why did you choose this career?

I chose this career so I could help others. Growing up I had trouble in some areas and I wanted to be able to help people who also had trouble.

Do you enjoy working with children?

I do enjoy it! I like to be busy and love when students ask for help and enjoy being able to help them.

What is the main reason you like this school?

The main reason I like this school is the children. I like it when the students are happy and have a smile on their faces.

How do you think your life would be without this job?

Life would be very different. I would be sitting at a desk making computer programs.

Did you choose to work at this school?

No,I didn’t choose to work at Newman. I was at a different school and my position was cut there so I was moved to Newman because there was an open position here.

What was the hardest time you’ve been through at work?

STAAR testing is the hardest time I’ve been through at work.

Do you ever get impatient working with students?

No, never. If I know a student is struggling, I find another way to help them but don’t get impatient with them.

Where did you go to school?

I graduated from Irvin High School then attended El Paso Community College and ended up getting my Bachelor’s Degree from Park University in Computer Science. I went to UTEP to get my certification as a teacher.

How did you feel when you found out you were Newman’s Teacher of the Year?

I was excited and nervous. I was excited because teachers were happy and I was surprised. I was nervous because I didn’t know how to act.
