Welcome to Second Grade!

Hello, my name is Ana Sambrano and I have been teaching at Newman for 13 years.  Previously, I had worked as a teacher's aide for 4 years in this same school. I have been with this district for a total of 17 years.  I am a graduate of UTEP and a native of El Paso.

I had the pleasure of meeting several parents at the Open House we had in September.  By now many parents have realized that second grade is not like it used to be.  There is a lot that second grade students must master before they move on to third grade.  Two of the most important subjects are reading and math.  Please make sure your child reads every night for at least 20 minutes.  Second grade classes are scheduled to go to the library every other week. Students are reminded that they can go after school to return and check out more books.  Also, please ensure that your child is also practicing his/her math facts that are assigned by Mrs. Wagner.  Mrs. Wagner and myself are departmentalized this year. This means that your child has two teachers; one for math and science and one for reading/ language arts.  Students have an assignment notebook where they write their assignments on a daily basis. This is also used as a communication tool between teachers and parents. Please don't forget to check your child's homework and sign their assignment notebook.
Thank you!
